OBGYN: Journal Article

The purpose of this study was to see if a double dose of Levonorgestrel-based emergency (1.5 mg to 3 mg) contraception works better for patients with obesity. What makes this study unique compared to others is looking specifically at the obese patient, because patients with higher BMI tend to have a higher failure rate of emergency contraception.  This study was RCT, it enrolled patients who had a BMI of 30 and weighed a minimum of 176 lbs. There were 70 patients who enrolled and completed the study. The researchers found no differences between LNG dosing groups in the proportion of individuals with no follicle rupture for at least 5 days and also found no differences in the time to follicle rupture before 5 days. The reason this study is important is that it found no relevance that doubling the dose has any effect on patients.  Instead, patients with obesity should use ulipristal acetate for emergency contraception for a better outcome.
